Fresh from wrapping up their fourth consecutive Scottish Premiership title with a dominant 5-0 win over Dundee United, Brendan Rodgers’ side now turn their attention to their final clash of the season against their oldest rivals. Despite being champions, there’s a score to settle.
The Hoops may have been Scotland’s most consistent and dominant side over the course of the campaign, but recent derby form tells a different story. Rangers have won the last two league encounters – one at Ibrox and another at Celtic Park – and also took Celtic to extra time in the League Cup Final at Hampden before losing on penalties.
Engels, who has impressed in his first season in Glasgow, knows full well what the fixture means – and insists the motivation is clear.
“We want to win every game, it’s not only the Rangers game that we want to win, otherwise, you cannot be champions.
“Of course, it’s a big game and it is big also for us because we lost the last two,” he told RecordSport.
“Everybody was really disappointed about those two games so it’s up to us to now take revenge.”
Adding to the occasion, Sunday’s fixture will mark the return of away fans at the derby for the first time since 2019, with over 2,000 Celtic supporters set to be in the away end at Ibrox.
The players will be looking to give the Celtic fans something to cheer about, with a treble on the horizon.
