Chris Sutton believes Celtic still have important work to do before the transfer window closes, despite adding Kasper Høgh and Camilo Duran to the squad.
Speaking to Sky Sports before the league opener against Dundee at Celtic Park, Sutton welcomed the arrival of the two strikers but said other areas still need attention.
“There are two new strikers in. I think everybody is happy to see the pedigree of the strikers as much as anything,” he said.
“Kasper Høgh and Camilo Duran scored goals in the Champions League for their respective clubs last season.
“But I think there are other areas of the team and the squad where Celtic certainly need to strengthen.”
Sutton also pointed to the uncertainty around Alistair Johnston and Arne Engels.
Both players have been linked with moves away, and Sutton believes Celtic must be ready to replace them properly if either one leaves.
“There is a question mark over whether Alistair Johnston will be here next season, and Arne Engels,” he said.
“If they do go, can you replace them like-for-like or with the same quality?
“A lot of Celtic fans are worried about that situation. There is still work to do.”
When asked if the squad could get weaker before it gets stronger, Sutton did not play down the concern.
“Yeah, absolutely, and that is the worry,” he said.
The former Celtic striker also raised the issue at left-back.
“Even little things like the left-back situation,” he said.
“If Kieran Tierney gets injured, he is the only left-back Celtic have.
“Celtic didn’t sign Saracchi again, so there is still work to be done in terms of bringing players in and not losing key players.”
Sutton also said it will be easier to judge Celtic and the rest of the league once the window has closed.
“At the end of the transfer window, it will be a lot easier to judge how every team in the Scottish Premiership will fare,” he added.
He also spoke about the importance of Champions League qualification and the need to rebuild the feeling around the club after last season.
Sutton believes Martin O’Neill’s hunger for the job is still clear, but he knows the pressure will grow quickly if Celtic fail to reach the group stage.
The Celtic attack looks stronger, but the squad is not finished.
