They have both worn the famous Celtic jersey but what will people make of Chris Sutton’s bold statement which bills Virgil van Dijk as the THIRD best footballer in the world – only behind Messi and Ronaldo.

Virgil van Dijk has blossomed into the player Celtic fans knew he could be. The Celtic Park faithful saw it often enough when the Dutchman wore the Hoops.

When the defender was a Celtic player, it has been well documented that many clubs turned their nose up at Virgil’s obvious talent because he was playing in Scotland at the time.

It took a stint with Southampton for people and more specifically Liverpool to take notice of him.

Even our current manager Brendan Rodgers overlooked Van Dijk while in the Liverpool job.

Since joining Liverpool in January the former Celtic star has played in a Champions League final and is currently part of a team who is tied on points with both Chelsea and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

The Anfield club forked out a lot of money for the big man and he seems to have helped Liverpool with their defensive woes.

Is he the third best player in the world though?
