Chris Sutton has questioned Celtic’s handling of Brendan Rodgers’ contract situation after the manager revealed he has not received a formal offer to extend his stay at the club.

Rodgers, who is in the final year of his deal, admitted on Friday that while he has held informal talks with Dermot Desmond and Michael Nicholson, no proposal has been put in front of him.

The revelation comes despite Rodgers being left unhappy with the summer transfer window, where business wasn’t done, or wasn’t completed quickly enough.

Reacting to the comments, Sutton expressed disbelief that the club had not acted sooner.

“The most staggering thing (well maybe not) out of Brendan Rodgers’ presser is him saying that he hasn’t had a contract offer on the table,” Sutton wrote on X. “How can a guy entering his final year who has won so much (11 trophies) and made progress last season in CL not have a concrete offer?”

Rodgers has stressed he would be open to staying beyond this season but said any new deal would have to come with conditions that allowed him to operate effectively in the transfer market. His future remains one of the central talking points around Celtic Park, with fan unrest against the board showing no signs of easing.

Who really knows what will happen with his contract? Next summer feels like a long time away, and a lot can change between now and then.

Some fans are hoping that board members change between now and then, with a protest planned on Sunday. Celtic fans at Rugby Park will enter the stand after 12 minutes.

  1. A share insurgence is a must to wrestle away majority shareholding from Desmond and put genuine Celtic people in control who have the desire to keep the club at the top and be a real force in Europe. Celtic are clearly not a major part of Desmond’s businesses portfolio. With only 32% majority shareholding he has to be overthrown.
