Chris Sutton has voiced his concerns over Celtic’s January transfer window, questioning whether Brendan Rodgers’ squad is in a stronger position now that the window has closed.

The window slammed shut on Monday night, and going by the reaction on social media, fans aren’t happy with dealings in January.

Posting on X, the former Hoops striker wrote:

“Not sure Celtic are in a stronger position squad-wise now the window has shut.”

And he’s not wrong. Celtic look weaker, particularly in attack, after failing to replace Kyogo Furuhashi, leaving no proven back-up striker behind Adam Idah.

With Kyogo sold to Rennes, the expectation was that Celtic would bring in another centre-forward. Instead, the club failed to deliver, leaving Idah and Kenny as the only natural strikers in the first team squad.

The only alternative is moving Daizen Maeda through the middle, but that creates another problem—it weakens Celtic’s wing options, especially after Luis Palma left on loan to Olympiacos.

Celtic did strengthen at left-back, with Jeffrey Schlupp arriving on loan from Crystal Palace. He will provide competition for Greg Taylor, filling the void left by Alex Valle, who made the move to Como.

But overall, the window has to be viewed as disappointing. A striker was badly needed, and Brendan Rodgers himself made that clear. The failure to get one in could prove costly as Celtic chase the title and prepare for Bayern Munich in the Champions League knockout stage.

Sutton’s tweet does echo what many Celtic fans are thinking—the squad isn’t stronger after this window. Rodgers will now have to make do with what he has, but if injuries hit, this lack of depth could come back to haunt the club.

  1. Perhaps some of the recruitment team were more into kerb-crawling than football.

Utter disgraceful window. Find plenty of creepy execs and pay the handsomely. The team? Wasting money on young folk; stick with what’s left and cross fingers.

  2. Signed Jota so he can take over from Maeda when he plays as striker.
This is because Kyogo was allowed to walk mid season. Are we stronger up front? No. We are worse off.

We got a left back that is experienced but lacks pace. After Valle left. Are we stronger there? I’m not convinced.

No centre half that could take our defence to the next level by winning headers and has some pace.

No midfield enforcer? Seriously lacking since Broony left.
Did you see him getting marked out of games by Sevco players? They couldn’t get far enough away from him.

Absolute balls up of a window. Going to be interesting to see how Rodgers reacts. I guarantee a condition of him coming back was that he can’t complain when the board refuse to bring in players he needs.
Last time he was in this position he fled by the next transfer window.

    • Maeda is next to be sold??? Along with Kuhn and other similar performers???

Celtic want to win a Scottish treble? Or a 55 -56-57th title and manage better returns from Euro competitions???

Time to invest wisely was this month.

Hope St Brendan can do well with what he has (injuries and suspensions) squad wise.

      In St Brendan we trust.

We do and so do the CFC suits.

If he can, it means, all in reverse gear, like usual.
