Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has weighed in after Dermot Desmond’s explosive statement on Brendan Rodgers’ resignation and, true to form, he hasn’t held back.
Taking to social media shortly after the statement dropped, Sutton delivered a typically sharp response, appearing to question Desmond’s version of events and the board’s handling of the situation.
“So in the end it was all Brendan’s fault… good luck to Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney in the short term… bring back big Ange 🍀”
The Sky Sports pundit’s remark sums up the split reaction among supporters. Some siding with Desmond’s defence of the club’s hierarchy, others feeling Rodgers has been made a scapegoat for deeper problems behind the scenes.
Ange Postecoglou remains adored by fans after his treble-winning tenure before joining Spurs, will no doubt strike a chord with many who still pine for the Australian’s bold, attacking brand of football.
Whether Celtic will turn to another former manager or not remains to be seen, but the club will need to get the next appointment right. They can’t afford to appoint the wrong manager.
It’s been a chaotic few hours at Celtic Park: Rodgers has resigned, Desmond has gone public in a rare and fiery statement, Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney have stepped in on an interim basis and now the fanbase is left debating who’s really to blame, and who should lead the club forward next.

Who the hell does Desmond think he is? He is NOT the owner of the club. He is simply a majority shareholder.
He isn’t a majority shareholder. He is the largest shareholder and a gasnlighting charlatan to boot.
His statement is full of holes.
He’s right though. His statement rings pretty true. We were let down badly by a guy who also let Celtic fans down back in 2019. Dismal since Munich.
Don’t Trust Any of Them
If what Dermot Desmond said about Brendan is true then why was Brendan not sacked? It doesn’t make any sense. Truth is, Brendan has had enough of a penny pinching Board that has destroyed a great team and made a global laughing stock of the club. Desmond isn’t fooling anyone. He must think our heads button up the back by repeating the same tired old sophistry about how dedicated the Board is to the club and how every pound goes back into strengthening the brand and the team. They are notorious in Europe for low-balling clubs when bidding for good players, and inevitably losing out on said players. That’s why Brendan ended up with nothing to work with – it was because Nicholson and Co failed in their job to recruit quality players.
Brendan Rodgers, for me, shares a little of the responsibility in that I never liked his playing style, which I think unsettled a few of the players who subsequently left, but he is by no stretch of the imagination the cause of this present crisis. That dishonour belongs entirely to the Board and their outdated “model”.
The fact that they appear to have overlooked big Ange to bring back the 73-year-old Martin O’Neill speaks volumes alone about their lack of ambition. I think they reckon that this old Irishman will be a bit more of a company man than the last Irishman. I wish Martin O’Neill the best but let’s face it, he should be out to pasture at his age. Football has moved on since his great stint back in the early 2000s. I think this is about getting a yes man in place while putting all the blame on Brendan for the failings of a failed Board.

Martin Blackshaws take on the matter sounds bang on to me I never liked Brendons style of play but for the Board to attempt to make him a scapegoat for there negligence NO WAY TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE.
Rodgers jumped before he could get sacked in 2 weeks when we lost to Sevco. Just like last time he made this great club a laughing stock.
The board are not going to get out of this one easy. Rodgers was put in because he was finished as a manager and the board saw a stooge they could bully around. Ange would demand money to buy fast attacking players or face the same struggles he had at Tottenham and any other semi respected manager would want assurances that they could buy the squad that fits their philosophy.
Watch them try to make Maloney or Broonie manager so they can screw them over too.
Espirito Santo would be the only manager that could come in and turn this team around with minimum changes but he wouldn’t come cheap.
