Chris Sutton has urged Celtic fans to show patience and support if Wilfried Nancy is appointed as the club’s next manager, drawing comparisons to how Ange Postecoglou overcame early scepticism to become a modern-day Parkhead hero.
Despite growing speculation, there have been no credible reports suggesting Celtic are close to naming a permanent successor to Brendan Rodgers. Both Nancy and Bodo/Glimt boss Kjetil Knutsen continue to be linked, but it’s believed Knutsen would prefer to remain in Norway until after Bodo’s Champions League campaign concludes, likely pushing any move until late January.
Speaking on the RecordSport podcast, Sutton reminded supporters how quickly opinions can change once results start to come, referencing Postecoglou’s remarkable transformation from unknown to treble-winning legend.
“You know, when Ange Postecoglou came in, he took a lot of flack, didn’t he? Because nobody had ever heard of him and dismissed his track record.
“I don’t know how people would view Knutson’s track record and what he’s achieved at Bodo, the fact that he’s gone deep in European competitions before, I think, you know, certainly would bode well.
“If Wilfred Nancy is the choice then, you know, you’ve got to give him a chance, give him an opportunity.
“I think any manager taking over this current squad has the work cut out. “
Nancy, who recently became available after Columbus Crew’s early playoff exit, is seen as a progressive coach known for his possession-based, attacking football and strong player development record.
With Martin O’Neill’s interim spell still uncertain and the club’s hierarchy remaining tight-lipped, fans are growing restless for clarity.
Hopefully, over the coming days, the picture will start to get clearer and fans will be able to know what’s happening as players start arriving back from the international break.
Celtic’s next match is next Saturday evening, 22nd November, against St Mirren.
