Chris Sutton Slams Timing Of ‘Excellent’ Celtic Signing

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has praised Kelechi Iheanacho after the Nigerian marked his debut with a stoppage-time winner at Rugby Park.

Iheanacho converted from the spot in the 96th minute to give Brendan Rodgers’ side a 2-1 victory over Kilmarnock and return them to the top of the Premiership on goal difference.

The late strike capped a dramatic afternoon where Daizen Maeda opened the scoring with a header before David Watson equalised for Killie in the closing stages. With the game heading for a draw, James Forrest’s shot struck the arm of Lewis Mayo, and after a VAR check, Celtic were awarded the penalty that Iheanacho coolly dispatched.

Sebastian Tounekti also impressed on his debut, playing with directness and flair that gave Celtic much-needed attacking spark. Sutton highlighted the winger’s display while pointing out the frustration that such quality wasn’t available earlier in the season when the Hoops crashed out of the Champions League.

Taking to social media after the final whistle, Sutton shared his view on the win, praising both Iheanacho and Tounekti while acknowledging Kilmarnock’s resilience.

Sutton’s comments will strike a chord with supporters who have been calling for more quality in attack. Iheanacho’s composure under pressure was a reminder of the value an experienced finisher can bring, while Tounekti’s fearless approach on debut showed the Hoops may have unearthed a new creative spark.

The victory lifted Celtic back above Hearts into first place, but Sutton’s point about timing is one that lingers. Both Iheanacho and Tounekti looked like players capable of making a difference on the European stage, and Rodgers will now be hoping they can push Celtic forward domestically.

For now, though, Sutton summed up the mood perfectly, relief at a dramatic three points, excitement over two debutants, and recognition that Celtic still have levels to climb.
