Chris Sutton has called on Celtic to resolve Greg Taylor’s contract situation quickly, insisting the left-back remains a crucial part of Brendan Rodgers’ squad despite Kieran Tierney’s impending return to the club.

Taylor’s current deal is running down, and while negotiations over an extension have been reported, there has been no official confirmation of an agreement.

Sutton, speaking on the situation on Sky Sports, made it clear that he believes securing Taylor’s future should be a priority.

Celtic have to get that deal done. It’s as simple as that. Kieran Tierney, it’s great him coming back, but let’s get it right.

“How many games is he going to play? You know, he has had injury issues in the past. You need really strong cover. You need more than that.

“You have to understand Kieran cannot play week in and week out every single game. Greg Taylor has been phenomenal. I think at the top level 1v1 situation, Champions League, sometimes he gets found out, but what he brings to Celtic and playing that inverted role, nobody else does it as well as him.”

With Taylor continuing to impress domestically and providing the tactical flexibility Rodgers demands from his full-backs, Sutton’s comments reflect the wider sentiment among supporters that losing Taylor would be a major misstep.

As Celtic prepare for another tilt at European football next season, the need for depth and reliability across the squad remains essential. Whether Taylor chooses to extend his stay at Parkhead could have a significant bearing on Celtic’s plans for the next campaign.

But what is clear is that Brendan Rodgers is looking to take his Celtic team further. Signing Kieran Tierney is a brilliant piece of business. The Arsenal left-back has bundles of quality and is in the peak of his career. He’s someone that will come into the squad and instantly improve it.
