Celtic and Airdrie had a successful relationship last season, with three players heading to the club on loan and sharing a ground with the side for the B team and Women’s matches.

Airdrie is hoping the relationship develops throughout this season, bringing more players to the club on loan. Owen Moffat has been linked to the club, but nothing has come from the interest yet.

As quoted by the Daily Record, Callum Fordyce (the Airdrie assistant) said;

 “We have a good relationship with Celtic, with us sharing the pitch last season, and there were some successful loans.

“Kerr came in, Brody and Jonathan – though Jon didn’t get much of a crack at it because we were very strong in the forward areas and producing goals. But when Jonathan played he did really well.

“The three that came from Celtic did really well, we had a good relationship.

“I feel the manager, Ian Murray, developed them as players. When players go out on loan, at the end of the day it’s the manager’s job to improve players, make them better, and I feel like he did that.

“They’re round about the first-team but maybe not getting it at their parent club, so if we can get that good loan deal it can work.

“It’s a good loan market out there, especially youngsters, and you see how successful they can be, not just at us, but other teams.

“It’s always a market that ourselves and other clubs will be looking at, because there are wee gems out there.”

Loaning Players Leaves Celtic in a Sticky Situation

Celtic has their Colts team competing in the Lowland League, which is two divisions lower than Airdrie. The standard of football will be better in the higher-up divisions, so the player could potentially develop quicker and better with another club.

However, Celtic run the Colts team alongside the first team. This gives them the chance to play how the first team does so when they do make the transition up, it’s a lot easier. It also allows players to switch between the sides like Moffat and Dawson did last season.

There are benefits to both, but you’d imagine that Celtic would prefer to keep their players at the club.
