It has been confirmed that Toulouse have ended their pursuit of Celtic defender Stephen Welsh. [Anthony Joseph]

The French side had the 22-year old as their number one centre back choice but have given up on signing Welsh during this window.

Ange Postecoglou has been very firm that Welsh is key part of his team and praised the defender after the game yesterday.

With Moritz Jenz arriving later than what was possibly hoped, it was important that Welsh got a lot of minutes under his belt during pre-season.

His league campaign couldn’t have got off to a better start as he nodded the Hoops into the lead only three minutes into the game.

Matt O’Riley’s corner picked out the defender perfectly who stuck the ball past Kelle Roos to get the Scottish Champions off to a flyer.

The narrative around Welsh from the managers perspective has changed and although he didn’t feature as much as Carl Starfelt and Cameron Carter-Vickers last season Postecoglou is wanting Welsh to be part of the squad and push the other defenders.

Stephen played well yesterday and at this point with Starfelt still expected to be out for a while, the jersey is pretty much Welsh’s to lose with him likely being given the nod next week in Dingwall.
