Celtic made an attempt to sign full-back Karim Fouad according to Nogoom FC’s President Mohamed El Tawila.

The 21-year-old made an astonishing 62 appearances for his club last term and has been in demand according to the club and his agent.

However, the defender has opted for a move to Al Ahly despite the interest from Europe.

As quoted by RecordSport, Mohamed El Tawila said: “Celtic of Scotland made an offer to buy the player, but his preference was to move to Al Ahly.

“He also had an offer to go to Benfica on trial

“The transfer is completed and he will join them after Al Ahly play Kaizer Chiefs in the African Champions League Final later this month.”

The players’ agent, John Edward, said:

“Karim was on the radar of many European clubs, but he has made it clear he wants to sign for Al Ahly.”

While this information is not much use to Celtic fans now with the player heading elsewhere, it does give you an insight into what Celtic are looking for and where.

They appear to be using their vast resources to search for players outside the usual places.

We have brought two guys in this summer, both from Sheffield Wednesday. Going further afield to search for undiscovered talent is imperative to a club like Celtic.

We do need defensive reinforcements and it’s at least heartening to hear the club are making moves behind the scenes to beef up the squad.

Ange Postecoglou has identified the positions he wants to strengthen and it’s up to both the manager and the current scouting team to put their heads together and make some positive moves.

  1. If he has chosen a club like that over Celtic then he’s not worth a second’s thought. Mediocrity attracts mediocrity, just ask Sevco (the worst league winners in living memory) about attracting fourth rate players. This coming season Celtic expect to resume their typical levels so players who want to sign for pub clubs are no loss to us.
