Callum McGregor has been at Celtic his entire career and was a major part of our success during the quadruple treble era.

The midfielder came through the ranks at the club and has become a focal point of the team.

There has been murmurings and rumours for the past two seasons the midfielder is wanted down south by former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers at Leicester. As we approach the end of the season and the whole squad is under the spotlight, it stands to reason these rumours would surface again. [MailSport]

Callum has not had a good season, his outing at Ibrox on Sunday only compounding his disappointing campaign. The player he was under Brendan Rodgers appears to be lost to the Neil Lennon era.

The bhoy needs his confidence back and a manager who can utilise him better.

A lot of Celtic fans will flippantly cast Callum aside after this season and we’ve already read comments with supporters saying they’d drive him down to Leicester.

John Kennedy didn’t shirk from the subject of Callum potentially leaving the club, but the interim Celtic boss made it clear the midfielder has never spoiled for a move or wanted to leave the club.

“I don’t think there’s a danger of Callum hankering for the Premier League or becoming disenchanted at Celtic. Callum’s very committed to the club. He showed that when he sat down last time to sign his new contract.” Kennedy told the Sunday Post.

“I know Callum well, I’ve had him from the youth team all the way through. Speaking to him, he’s a leader in his own right and the perfect character. That’s in terms of how he conducts himself every day, his professionalism and his performances in big moments.

“He’s very much committed to Celtic. This season has hurt Callum, as it has us all. But the club’s been a huge part of his life and he’s very driven to make it change again. He’s been a huge part of the success we’ve had and this season has hit him hard. He wants us to quickly hit our stride next season and put things right. Callum is committed fully to the club. I see Callum as the next captain and successor to Scott. If I’m asked my opinion on it, I’d say Callum.”

Callum is in line to be captain next season if he sticks around or if the new manager wants him to stick around. There’s no doubt what he’s capable of and right now he needs an arm around him and to get back to basics.

Given the upheaval about to take place keeping a core of players we know can perform is vital.

McGregor can rise again and help Celtic to more titles.
