ANGE POSTECOGLOU was asked about the SFWA awards on Sunday evening which has caused controversy due to the unsavoury content from one of the speakers.
It prompted a backlash on social media with prominent female broadcaster Eilidh Barbour to speak out on how abhorrent the language used was.
CeltsAreHere spoked to one attendee of the event who told us: : ‘I was totally shocked at the racist, misogynistic and homophobic ‘comedy’ in their speeches tonight.’
Responding to a question about the event, Ange told The Cynic, the content was far from appropriate:
“Content wasn’t appropriate, I don’t know if it’s appropriate at anything.”
“You need to understand how people feel about these things.”
“Make it a teaching moment to be better.”
The SFWA released a statement in the aftermath of the event:
‘The Scottish Football Writers’ Association apologises to anyone offended or upset by material from one of our after-dinner speakers at last night’s annual awards dinner.
‘We have agreed unanimously that this will act as a catalyst to review and improve the format of our future events to make it an enjoyable and inspirational event for all.’
You get the feeling nothing would have been done about this had Eilidh not spoken up. Many other journalists who boycott the event have spoken about the old boys club atmosphere at the event.
Ange picked up manager of the year from the organisation but didn’t shy away from criticising the event they put on.
Attitudes need to change, this shouldn’t be still an issue nowadays, but sadly we see it not just in football but all facets of working life.
