CELTIC were linked with a move for Danny Simpson during the week with the player apparently coming in on trial on Monday to try and win a Celtic deal.

Not many people are talking about his playing ability, even at 32, as many believe the player is more than capable of coming in and doing a good job for the club.

However, the backlash surrounding the signing comes from the defender’s conviction for domestic abuse back in 2015. There are plenty of Celtic fans who believe someone convicted of something so cowardly should not be in a position to receive adulation from the masses and especially children.

From a purely footballing perspective, former Premier League man Danny Mills has said it would be a great move for both parties.

Asked if it would be a good move by Football Insider, Danny said: It would be, yeah. Danny Simpson, Premier League winner. It’s one of those – that was the peak, the pinnacle of his career, absolutely outstanding.

“Danny Simpson, he’s been around for a long, long time. For a team like Celtic, the links with Celtic through Neil Lennon, I’m sure will have a part in that. Neil Lennon is still very friendly with the football club.

“Simpson’s 32 now, it’s unlikely he’s going to get a move to a top Premier League side, so it’s a good move for Celtic, chance of European football for him, he’ll play week in, week out. Celtic get a very good player with experience. He could quite easily drop into the lower end of the Premier League, could drop into the Championship.”

If Simpson does come to Lennoxtown next week, it will be interesting to see if the club will believe it’s worth pursuing considering the resistance already shown.

Celtic do need a full time right back, but is Simpson worth the hassle and should he be put in a position to be a role model for young Celtic fans?
