COPENHAGEN have taken the bizarre decision to sell their top striker less than 48 hours before their crunch Europa League tie with Celtic.
Pieros Sotiriou is on his way to Astana in a £4m move, leaving Copenhagen without their top man for the double header.
Copenhagen have just started their new season and fell to defeat in their first game against minnows Esbjerg. Their preparation for the game hasn’t been the best and their manager Stale Solbakken acknowledges the timing could have been better.
“The timing could be better. I acknowledge that.” Stale Solbakken told SunSport.
“Our wish was that the transfer would happen in a few weeks’ time but we got a good offer.
“It is not a super offer, but I would refer to it as an acceptable offer and that’s why we sell him now.
“Of course it’s a pity that it happens before our matches against Celtic.
“But I am convinced that with Dame N’Doye, Michael Santos and Mikkel Kaufmann we will probably be okay.”
For the first time in years, Celtic are favourites at this stage of the competition and with this latest news should feel confident they can get the job done both home and away.
There’s no room for complacency but Celtic are flying domestically and have the momentum while Copenhagen are at the early stages of their season. We’ve seen how slow and sluggish Celtic can be to get going at the start of our own season in the past.
The Bhoys fly out Wednesday afternoon to Denmark.
