Celtic announced two departures over the weekend in Jonny Hayes and Jozo Simunovic.

Hayes was out of contract and while we believed Jozo had a year to go, the club mentioned they had the right to extend his deal for one more year but chose not to keep the Croatian.

We were expecting Celtic to announce another departure when Jonny Hayes made it clear he was off but we were certain it would be Craig Gordon.

The goalkeeper is in the same boat as Jonny and looked to be running down his contract so he could go play elsewhere next season. Gordon has fallen down the pecking order at Celtic Park and wants to get as much game time as possible before he hangs up his gloves – understandable.

However, he was not on the chopping block this weekend. Has there been a change of heart or have Celtic made a play to keep the goalkeeper around?

Gordon’s options could be limited now with the current shutdown forcing clubs to rethink their transfer and wage budgets.

If Celtic aren’t going to go for Fraser Forster – it would stand to reason they’d try to keep Craig around, even if that meant playing second fiddle to Scott Bain.

We should no either way shortly if Celtic and Craig will part ways or not.

  1. Craig Gordon is not my first choice but I’d always choose him over Scott Bain. If we can’t sign Fraser Forster then letting Craig Gordon go makes no sense. The free kick goal which Bain lost to Tavernier at Ibrox should have seen him chased but then his European blunder sealed it for me. Gordon withstood the interference from Brendan Rodgers and the introduction of the clown Devries as the first choice. He’s not perfect but deserves better treatment than to be abandoned.
