Former Hearts and Scotland manager Craig Levein has said that on-loan Celtic defender Jack Hendry didn’t fulfil his potential when he joined the Hoops.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound, when discussing Hendry’s inclusion in Steve Clarke’s Euros squad this afternoon, Levein believes that the centre-back had potential when he joined Celtic under Brendan Rodgers but didn’t fulfil it, which has led to him effectively restarting his career, on-loan in Belgium with Oostende.

“He’s really had to go abroad to begin his career if that makes sense. He’s playing week-in, week-out now. He had potential, didn’t quite realise it [at Celtic], but now he’s had an opportunity to play weekly. It seems to have improved him.

“I haven’t seen a lot of him out there. I think Steve’s been very loyal to his guys in defence. Gallagher has been a revelation in some regards, the way he’s played. Tierney’s played centre-back and been fantastic. Cooper’s hasn’t let anybody down. I’m a fan of McKenna’s, he’s young still but has a lot of potential.

“I think we’ve quite a strong line-up.”

It has very much been a good season for Hendry, whose future was unknown last season after a poor time at the club.

The loan spell with Oostende seems to have revitalised his career though and has even led to a call-up to the Scotland squad at this summer’s European Championships.

This probably means his future will remain unknown until after the tournament, as Oostende look to buy the Scottish defender permanently. However, there is still a chance he could remain at the club going into next season.
