DAMIEN DUFF has become a surprise contender for a role with the Celtic backroom team according to reports this evening.

The former Irish international has been working with youngsters at Shamrock Rovers back in Ireland and is now looking to take serious steps in his coaching career.

Duff, who is a self admitted Celtic fan is apparently being lined up to replace Shaun Maloney in the under 20 coaching setup after the Scottish international left the club to take on a full time role with Belgium.

It’s thought there is a good relationship between Duff and Rodgers who know each other from their time at Chelsea.

Celtic’s developmental system is treated very seriously and any coach that comes in will be well scouted by Rodgers before any decision is made.

With so many youngsters looking like they can make the breakthrough to the Celtic team in the next few years, it’s up to the developmental coaching staff for preparing them for the step up.
