Daniel Levy has finally broken his silence over Ange Postecoglou’s sacking.

Just 16 days after lifting Tottenham’s first trophy in 17 years and their first European trophy in over 40, Postecoglou was shown the door. Spurs chairman Levy says it came down to ambition and insisted he wants more than just a bit of silverware.

“There’s no point having a wonderful stadium if you don’t have a wonderful team, winning,” Levy said on Spurs’ YouTube. “Failure is not an option.”

He reckons Spurs should be competing for the Premier League and the Champions League – and clearly doesn’t believe Ange was the man to take them there.

“We need to win the league. We want to win the Premier League. We want to win the Champions League. We want to win.”

He went on, “I’m very grateful to Ange. I don’t regret appointing him. In his first season we finished fifth and in our second season we were over the moon to win a trophy. But we need to compete in all competitions, and we felt we needed a change.”

Levy insists it wasn’t a solo call. “It was a collective decision, it wasn’t just mine. Emotionally, it was difficult, but we believe we’ve made the right decision for the club.”

With Thomas Frank coming in from Brentford, Levy’s betting big that he can take Spurs to the very top. But many fans are baffled that a proven winner like Ange, who delivered in Europe, has been ditched in favour of a man who’s never managed in Europe, let alone won anything.

It’s a decision that’s sure to come back and bite Spurs. Ange Postecoglou is expected to head back into management, with plenty of interest in him. There are a few clubs in England and Europe keen on him, while reports have suggested he could make the move to Saudi Arabia.

Still, back at Spurs, Levy says Postecoglou will always be part of Spurs history – just not their future.
