DAVIE PROVAN was not impressed with former Celtic midfielder Alan Thompson’s suggestion that should Neil deliver ten in a row, he would be up there with Jock Stein in Celtic folklore.

The Sky Sports pundit who regularly calls out people for howling at the moon while he himself howls at the moon has tried to put the potential achievement into perspective.

Provan is correct that Stein saw the nine in a row run from start to finish which is amazing in itself. However, if Neil Lennon does deliver ten in a row and given all the history he has made with the club over the years, he deserves to be in that bracket.

Provan disagrees:

“Ten-in-a-row fever already has some barking at the moon.” he told SunSport.

“Former Celts midfielder Alan Thompson claims Lennon will be up there with Jock Stein if he gets the job done.

“Do us a favour Thommo. Stein delivered all nine himself against much better opposition.

“That’s taking nothing away from Lenny, who has made a huge contribution towards The Ten.

“But he’s savvy enough to know it wouldn’t look at Stein’s achievement.”

Stein delivered the holy grail and nine in a row, that puts him at the top, but Neil Lennon’s achievements as a player and manager shouldn’t be disparaged. In the modern era, the manager has done exceedingly well and has to be up there if the ten is delivered.

Provan’s columns on SunSport is just full of Celtic rants every week, telling us ‘how it is’ when the Sky Sports man seems distanced from our product. It’s quite impressive the negativity he can squeeze out of a club who have won eleven trophies on the bounce.

  1. Agree with Provan on this one (rare) but he would go down as the man who achieved the impossible! Hopefully we can start playing better football with two strikers and stop all the negative play across the back fourHAIL HAIL???.

  2. You see Provan, Thommo was a pal of Lenny’s. You are Davie no mates, naebody likes you. You wouldn’t understand the meaning of the word ‘Loyalty’, you don’t have any pals. All you have ever done to Celtic is drag them down. Whilst, when you played the fans thought the world of you. Nice way to remember your old club.
Remember who you sh1t on, on the way up, cause on the way down….

  3. Neil Lennon was a Celtic player, supported them as a child and unlike Big John got his chance to play for his boyhood heroes and manage the first team. Big John played both for and against Celtic in his playing career and with the assistance of a fellow Celtic great Sean Fallon did achieve the nine, but the strain on winning the ten was beyond him due to his accident and Celtics auld penny-pinching board. Both managers started with the youths, then promoted to the reserves.
Both got the large promotion, as the managers before them had failed in achieving anything of note, considering the teams players and ages.
So if Neil does the ten he will be only the third Celtic manager to win 10 titles in between losing some, or due to unforseen circumstances Wilie Maley (16) and John Stein (10) also won many more cups.
And John Stein the big ear’d cup that gained him his Hoops support immortality.
