We have said it for a long time now, Davie Provan’s consumption of Scottish Football is heavily filtered through the looking glass of Sky Sports TV as well as his own experience from a bygone era.

He is one of these fans you meet down the pub who are just never happy even when things are good and when things are less good, you’re going to get an earful.

The comments in his SunSport column in 2018 have been very critical of the club as a whole. From the board to Brendan Rodgers and even to the fans at points.

Kris Commons was in his firing line this week when he went on a tirade about Celtic losing ground against their city rivals.

Celtic won a domestic treble last season, have won the first trophy of this season, are top of the league and are in Europe after Christmas – but all of this is a red herring as far as Provan is concerned and he believes Kris Commons pointing all these facts out makes him fair game.

“We’re reminded they are top of the league with a game in hand, still in Europe and already have the League Cup in their back pocket.” Provan wrote.

“Nothing to see here, move along please.

“According to former Hoops hero Kris Commons, Brendan Rodgers and Peter Lawwell will be very happy with that position.

“Kris, son, you’ve got to get off the sauce. The mauling Celts took last weekend should have alarm bells ringing throughout the club.”

There seems to be no middle ground with how Celtic’s season is going. You either have the eternal optimists who shoot you down when you criticise almost anything and then you have the Provan’s of the world who refuse to see the good.

Let me provide some middle ground. Celtic had a bad start to the season, they kicked on from September and had a very decent run in until December. Their Glasgow Derby defeat has sent many over the edge when it doesn’t have to be that way.

Celtic had to lose to the Ibrox club sometime; the club have lost to Killie, Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibs so it was always going to happen.

What needs to be acknowledged here is Celtic have not been at their best and they have been stretched to the max with injuries in many positions. Although they have not enjoyed it all their own way, everything which has been stated above is true.

Top of the league, Europe after Christmas where they qualified from a very competitive group and secured the League Cup.

It’s ok to say we need to improve but it’s also alright to point out we are doing pretty well for a club who are apparently in crisis if you listen to some of the hyperbole out there.

So, yes today, Davie Provan have us defending Kris Commons – that takes some doing.

  1. Provan, like Walker and Nicholas very rarely has anything good to say about the club that paid them with fans that idolised them.Provan is also one of the douressed commentaters out there.Walker and Nicholas make statements to appease their sevco paymasters within sky sports, sadly Commons has with most of his comments on Celtic seems to be doing the same, something that is more disapointing than surprising, given the charitable work he and his partner Lisa were doing at Celtic. He has however hit the nail on the head with his latest comments,we can defo see our cup more than half full.Top of the league, league cup in the trophy room, euro football after xmas, all without hitting anywhere near our top form, although glimpses of it in Perth,Aberdeen and Killie and Jambos at Celtic Park.
Every chance this winter break in Dubai and the new signings with hopefully more to come, will see us go on a decent run of results, opening up a gap on our rivals. HWGTIAR
