Many Celtic fans were left concerned last week when young central defender Stephen Welsh was substituted off due to what looked like a nasty challenge from St Mirren striker Jon Obika which caused his injury.

But when it was revealed that his injury wasn’t as bad as first feared, we were left relieved that it wouldn’t cause the 20-year to be out of action for an extended period of time. One man who shared that relief was former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie who also praised Welsh for his ‘brilliant’ performances of late when speaking to Football Insider.

“Welsh has been brilliant of late.

“I am relieved that it is not as bad as first feared.

“I didn’t think it looked that bad in real-time but when you see it after in slow motion you think, ‘Wow. This could be bad’.

“But he is a young boy so he will recover quickly and hopefully he will not be out for too long.”

It would have been a real shame had this injury kept Welsh out the side after coming in and impressing in the side, recently picking up the man of the match award in Celtic’s 2-1 win over Motherwell which also seen him grab his first goal for the club.

A return to the side on Wednesday could be on the horizon. Whether that is in the starting 11 or on the bench, Neil Lennon will want to make sure he is involved with the Hoops only central defensive options last Sunday being Shane Duffy and Kristoffer Ajer.
