It seems like a couple of life times ago when Celtic were desperate for a defender and they had lined up Ben Davies to sign for the club from Preston.

Everything was sorted — Davies was set to sign for Celtic on a pre-contract agreement when suddenly Liverpool hit a defensive crisis. Jurgen Klopps men panicked and signed Davies from under the nose of Celtic at the eleventh hour.

It was an incredibly baffling move from the Premier League club and a deal Celtic worked hard on went up in smoke in a matter of hours before he was going to sign for the bhoys.

Does the deal make sense in hindsight?

No — it seems more bizarre than it did at the time. Davies took the money and the chance to play for Liverpool and while he got the cash — he’s never played for the English club. Ben is now earmarked for the Anfield exit this summer never playing a game for the club.

The centre-back spent time out on loan at Sheffield Utd last season and will now look to get his career back on track. As poor footballing decisions go — Ben’s move to Liverpool is up there.

Celtic’s scouting team had watched Ben for a long time before attempting to sign him. I wonder if he’s still on a list somewhere at Celtic Park or the Hoops have moved on since then.

  1. Struggled for game time at the blades as others in the team pushed him out.

Wasn’t one of the blades best lian signings.
