It’s quite an odd one with Celtic’s Kasper Schmeichel.
The Dane trained as normal on Friday, and Martin O’Neill confirmed he had recovered well during his press conference in the afternoon.
Then, a few hours later, Schmeichel dropped quite the interview, saying he was out for up to six weeks after “smashing” his shoulder and his injections making him ill.
It rules him out of Denmark’s World Cup qualifiers next week.
Denmark head coach Brian Riemer has been slammed for his secrecy around the extent of the injury, with former Celtic and Denmark star Thomas Gravesen making his feelings more than clear on the situation.
And he’s now wondering if Kasper Schmeichel will ever pull on a Denmark top ever again.
He said to Viaplay in his homeland:
“This is clearly something that goes back a long, long way, and again I have to blame Brian Riemer. Come on out! What kind of secrecy is this? Why is it that you can’t talk about these things when they happen? Why does it have to come as such a surprise?
“It was a bombshell when he announced his cancellation. If Brian Riemer has known about it for a long time… Now take charge of the situation and go out and be the helmsman of this ship called DBU.
“Show us that you know everything and that you are aware of everything. Now stop creating a stir in the duck pond. Now come out and take control of this huge story, which is that our top goalkeeper is suddenly not there!
“I’m starting to wonder if this is the last we’ve seen of this fantastic goalkeeper.”
It’s certainly a strange one.
At Celtic, it’s doubtful that he’ll be able to make his way back into the team.
Vini Sinisalo has impressed between the sticks over the past few games; a run in the team is exactly what he needs.
Last season, Celtic paid the price for rushing Kasper Schmeichel back into the side. In the Scottish Cup final, he made a costly mistake that allowed Aberdeen to equalise and take the game to penalties.
