DEREK MCINNES made a rather peculiar prediction about his star defender after Scot McKenna was subject to a £3.5million bid from the Scottish champions.

Celtic showed a keen interest in the 21-year-old on Wednesday and approached Aberdeen with a bid they thought was fair given his experience and stature in the game to this point.

Aberdeen rejected that bid, which of course they are perfectly entitled to do.

McKenna is on a long term deal at Pittodrie so there’s still plenty of the time for the player to improve further and move on down the line – something McInnes acknowledges.

However, the Aberdeen manager has turned clairvoyant with his prediction that when McKenna does go, it will NOT be to Celtic.

A pretty strange comment to make considering the Bhoy’s interest in him.

Speaking about the interest in McKenna the Aberdeen boss said.

“Celtic had a conversation us, they made an offer and it was rejected so we move on.

“We are in no rush to sell Scott and when he does move, which he will at some point, it will probably be to a Premier League club down south.”

How can McInnes possibly predict this? Is he privy to something the rest of us aren’t or is the more likely scenario that the Dons aren’t willing to do business with Celtic at all?

On the face of it this seems fine – why would Aberdeen want to sell a player to their main rivals?

BUT that’s not the vibe we’re picking up from the Aberdeen boss, there seems to be a stubbornness not to ‘sell out’ and bow to Celtic on the transfer front. It’s somewhat of a trend this summer.

Yes, I know we bought Jonny Hayes off them last year but Celtic did pay a reasonable fee and also handed them Ryan Christie on-loan as a sweetener.

The Dons boss could have just left the comment at ‘He will leave at some point’, but insisted on adding the down south part almost gleefully.

This is all pretty moot. Most Celtic fans didn’t want McKenna at Celtic Park anyway, however there are clubs in the SPFL who will gladly take our youngsters and fringe players on-loan but don’t seem to want to do business when Celtic come calling.

Celtic get cast as a big old bully when it comes to signing domestic-based players but over the years Celtic have paid more than they should of for average stars.

The club paid over £1.5million for Nadir Ciftci for crying out loud!

  1. There seems to be an agenda in Scottish football not to sell any player to Celtic and I bet if Rangers come calling they will gladly let the player move on. So as usual the bias will continue, welcome to our corrupt football league.

  2. could you be reading something into things that just aren’t there?

McInnes may just believe that no Scottish clubs will pay the fee he reckons the player will attract
