Derek Rae was being as diplomatic as possible when he was asked about Celtic’s link with Malick Thiaw.

The Schalke defender has been touted as a possible replacement for the outgoing Christopher Jullien who is heading to the German club on-loan.

Rae, who commentated on the Scottish game for years and is now the voice of the Bundesliga for ESPN was sceptical about Celtic rumours.

The 21-Year-old is in high demand with a very high fee from Celtic’s point of view. If there’s no news coming out of Germany at the moment, is there much in the story at all?

Soccer Football – Bundesliga – Arminia Bielefeld v Schalke 04 – Bielefelder Alm, Bielefeld, Germany – April 20, 2021 Schalke 04’s Malick Thiaw in action with Arminia Bielefeld’s Ritsu Doan Pool via REUTERS/Wolfgang Rattay DFL regulations prohibit any use of photographs as image sequences and/or quasi-video.

Celtic have already put down a fairly large outlay for Cameron Carter-Vickers and look very likely to pay big money for Jota in the coming days. Another big money fee after those two would be highly unlikely.

It would be a top signing if the club did manage to bring Malick to Glasgow. As it stands – there’s not a lot of meat on the bones. It remains a rumour rather than something more substantial.

  1. £8m is a massive outlay but give it two years and he’ll probably be worth circa £28m, and that’s the kind of profit potential our Ferengi board can get behind…but it’s naught but paper pash as per usual I’m sure.
