It was the beginning of August when Derk Boerrigter came to town and signed for Celtic.
He was welcomed with an air of optimism but caution as his previous clubs fans were so quick to point out that the player was over familiar with the treatment table.
Indeed some Ajax fans couldn’t believe their luck that they had managed to offload the winger for a bit of money.
John Park and Neil Lennon took a gamble on a player who was thoroughly checked out by doctors before the move. The doctors were happy so the winger signed on the dotted line.
Unfortunately when the player made his debut it was over not long before it has started. Seemingly going over on his ankle which would rule him out of any further action for a couple of weeks. He has played here and there since, only to disappear once again with another niggling injury that has ruled him out of the Hibs game on Saturday and the game against his former club Ajax on Tuesday.
Some Celtic fans are starting to write him off, not because they think he lacks ability but question his ability to stay fit on a regular basis.
We all understand that players bodies let them down sometimes. We have seen that already this season with Mouyokolo, who was looking promising until he got a season ending injury.
We all hope Derk can get over these injuries and start making a big contribution to Celtic’s season but the longer he stays off the park the less faith Celtic fans will have in him.
Right now it looks like a gamble that hasn’t paid off.
BUT of course there is still plenty of time for the bhoy to turn it around.
