REWIND the clock back to when Brendan Rodgers first took over and Charlie Mulgrew had just turned down a contract extension with the club.

The player who was enjoying his second stint at the club and playing vice-captain to Scott Brown looked as if he may even finish his career at Celtic.

When Brendan Rodgers let Charlie train with Celtic even after his contract expired you would be forgiven for thinking a late deal might be done. But Rodgers didn’t fancy signing the defender up and he was soon on his way.

Mulgrew was quickly snapped up by Owen Coyle at Blackburn but suffered an injury early on which curtailed his progress. His first season at the club was somewhat forgettable but this season it’s been a whole different story.

Charlie has needed 38 times for Blackburn how are now managed by former Celtic manager Tony Mowbray and he’s enjoying a new lease of life.

Scoring 12 goals in all competitions the player has become a popular figure at the club and his form earned him a Scotland call-up and the captaincy for his country.

While there’s no denying his limitations, Charlie Mulgrew was an underrated utility man at the club and chipped in with his fair share. While sometimes it takes a move to a new club to get players back to their best – could we have gotten more out of him?

We certainly could have this season with the number of games and injuries that have gone on, he could slot into the midfield, left back and central defence if need be.

In the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t matter that much, but when you have no club football at the weekend, your mind wanders.

The lesson for today – stop silly international friendlies because I’m going out my mind!

  1. Charlie has needed 38 times for Blackburn Rovers ? What the hell does that mean ? Put your typewriter down and stop writing shite about former players

  2. I thought from the moment I heard he was on his way out that we were being a bit premature. Maybe not as a first team regular but he was still a more than decent player and a guy with his versatility is always worth having in the squad.
