Celtic loanee Diego Laxalt has reiterated the clubs need to win the Scottish Cup this season after such a disappointing campaign.

Speaking in an English speaking interview with Celtic TV for the first time, Laxalt admits it’s been a tough season, especially with players such as himself not getting to experience playing in front of a packed out Celtic Park, but also expressed the squads need to finish strongly by winning the Scottish Cup.

“It’s been a good experience. I learn new tutor, new culture, new style of football. I think it’s been a great adventure for me and my family.

“[Covid is] hard for me and my family, but also it’s hard for everyone. I think it’s no more difficult for us than for other people. Maybe one thing I [would have liked] to see is fans [at] Celtic Park.

“I think it’s a great group of boys. Not just the players, also everyone at the club has made me really, really welcome. I get on well with everyone, I think I’m a friendly guy. A friendly boy. Maybe sometimes when the Scottish accent is really difficult to understand, but it’s ok.

“It’s been a hard season, but in the last three games we’ve been getting better. I think for everyone, it’s been a strange season. Especially for the biggest club, because I haven’t had the fans in the stadium. I think that’s really strange for everyone.

“We need to finish as well as possible. At the big clubs, every season you need to win something. I think we must win the Scottish Cup.”

This season has certainly been a strange one for the Uruguayan internationalist.

He made a brilliant start to life at the club after joining on deadline day on loan from AC Milan, even though at the time it was during one of our worst runs of form this season.

Since that period though, he dropped off a little and has had to play second fiddle to Greg Taylor at times with both swapping in and out of the side.

There has been some suggestion that we could see him return to the club in the summer permanently in a deal involving Odsonne Edouard moving in the other direction.

At this stage, I am sure this sort of stuff will be parked to the side until the season is finished. One thing is for certain though, these players know that a performance is needed ahead of tomorrow’s tie and winning the Scottish Cup feels like a must now to salvage something from this campaign.
