LIAM MORRISON quit Celtic over a year ago to head to Bayern Munich.

After playing a role in the first team pre-season, the defender was picked up by the German giants and, to be honest, once they came in Celtic never had a chance.

Our youth system has been a bit of a joke, not much game time or real progression offered.

Bayern came in with a clear plan for Liam and spoke about his development.

At Celtic, it’s more you train and train, hope to get into some first team sessions then hope the manager fancies giving you a run out. There’s not much science to it and it can be down to luck.

Bayern present every young player with their route to the first team and how they can get there. Not all of them will but they will receive a first class football education while in Germany.

Speaking to RecordSport, Liam revealed it was tough to leave Celtic but he couldn’t turn down the offer of a life time.

“My journey so far has been great. There’s been a lot of ups and downs; being at Celtic and in with the first-team during pre-season and then signing for Bayern.

“I played some games with Bayern [youths] but unfortunately got injuries that caused me not to play. Leaving Celtic was a difficult decision but when a team like Bayern Munich are offering to sign you it’s very hard to turn down.

“They had the right pathway for me, so that was the decision I made.

“Moving to Germany from Scotland was very tough from the beginning, moving away from my family at such a young age and going to a country where the main language isn’t English. It was difficult, but once I got there, there were a few English and American boys.”

Celtic can make giant strides in the coming years to ensure guys like Liam see value in staying with the club.

A colt side set up in the Lowland league will give real, meaningful game time foe our younger players and if league reconstruction talks go as expected – Celtic could have a colt team in League 2 by next season.

  1. I completely disagree re: the colts. Every little hun git playing in that league will have zero compunctions about hacking the hell out of our lads “‘cos thur feenyinz”. What are they really going to learn from playing kick and rush football against brickies? Football in this country is a joke. Remember when teams weren’t allowed in to the SPL if their stadium wasn’t up to snuff? It’s time for such draconian measures again – if you can’t put a reserve side out you shouldn’t be classed as a professional club let alone be allowed to play in the top flight. Can’t afford it? Why not amalgamate with some of the other skintos? Scotland has far too many clubs/leagues for such a wee country.
