JOHN KENNEDY takes up the role as Neil Lennon’s assistant manager for the rest of the season but according to MailSport he was sounded out for a much more important role at Celtic going forward under Brendan Rodgers before the Irishman pulled the rug out from under us all.

The paper claims John was being groomed to become the new director of football at the club and that Brendan had given his blessing for the role to happen.

The Mail wrote: “Until recently, coach John Kennedy was in talks over a sporting director role with the blessing of Rodgers. The former defender will now become assistant manager, with reserve coach Damien Duff assuming first-team duties.”

This would be a profound switch in how Celtic run as a club and must still be the ultimate goal of the board to set it up so the coaches coach and the Director of football is responsible for facilitating the manager’s needs but also bringing in players who he thinks would be best for the club.

It remains to be seen if John will get that job now and maybe this should be explored more before a definite decision is made. We need a full time manager in place and a squad overhaul in the summer so having a Director of football in place by the summer looks unrealistic.
