Celtic’s recent performance in Europe has been less than stellar, a trend that has persisted even under the leadership of Ange Postecoglou. Despite the lack of tangible progress in terms of results, the team’s performances have shown promise, offering a glimmer of hope for the future.

As next season approaches, Postecoglou faces the daunting task of meeting high expectations in the Champions League. However, former Rangers player Ally McCoist has expressed scepticism about Celtic’s prospects in Europe.

McCoist’s comments came in response to Celtic’s Callum McGregor’s aspiration of participating in a European final with Celtic under Postecoglou’s guidance.

McCoist, in a conversation with BT Sport (via Football Scotland), quipped, “I don’t know, was he talking about playing on the PlayStation? They’ve got every chance of reaching a European final on the PlayStation. They’ve got no chance of going to a European final for the foreseeable future. The team’s good enough to win the league in Scotland. But do me a favour… come on!”

Given McCoist’s Ibrox allegiance, his lack of faith in Celtic is not entirely surprising. However, his comments could be perceived as disrespectful and distasteful.

Football, as we all know, is unpredictable. Few would have anticipated the Rangers’ making the Europa League final last year. Therefore, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility for Celtic to reach a European final, just like their Ibrox counterparts.

In the end, it would be a significant achievement for Celtic to reach a European final, not only for the club and its fans but also as a testament to the unpredictability of football. And who knows? It might even serve to prove McCoist wrong.

Celtic, as a club, should be aiming for the latter stages of the Europa League.

    • As a Celt I have to agree with Ally. He’s just seeing it for what it is. Far too lightweight in defence and midfield and Hart doesn’t instill condidence agsinst the best in Europe . Same defence and midfield didn’t cope last time round. Can’t see it being any better unless theres serious recruitment

  2. I find it interesting that Mr McCoist finds some comments “disrespectful.”Given the “billy boys” chant in memory of one fellow who believed in killing Catholics and the red band on the black socks of sevco a tribute to being “up to our knees in fenian blood” amidst years of anti Catholic bias and financial irregularities which created an unfair advantage for said boys’ trophy cupboard. Perhaps the word astonishing doesn’t quite cover mr McCoist’s obfuscate rhetoric but it’s a good place to start.

  3. Mcoist is correct .This is a team that struggles against Motherwell ,,rangers ,st mirren and others .Real danger of beating rangers as the worst team ever in the champion’s league and like rangers , no chance of doing well in ANY European competitions unless both vastly improve .Ange is about to see the whiny ,greeting faced worst losers in Scottish football and they’ll drive him away as they do with every manager except martin O’Neil

  4. For once Sally is right. There is zero evidence of us getting anywhere near a European final. Our performances over the last few years have been abysmal. Nobody expects us to turn over Real Madrid but Shahktar were there for the taking & we were outplayed in both ties v Leipzig. Also regularly beaten by clubs on a fraction of our budget (Cluj, Copenhagen, Ferencvaros, Bodo-Glimt etc).Obviously this is has been happening for years but there has been no upturn under Ange so far.
