There was a mass exodus expected from Paradise at the end of last season and sadly for a few players them expectations were fulfilled. Some fans might of had a favourite player listed to leave that they were hoping would remain at Parkhead but they would be disappointed.

Today Celtic released the following statement that shows the enormity of that exodus.

Celtic Football Club wishes Dorus all the very best in his future endeavours and extends the same gratitude to departing players Emilio Izaguirre, Cristian Gamboa, Regan Hendry, Dedryck Boyata, Mikael Lustig, Filip Benkovic, Scott Allan, Youssouf Mulumbu, Oliver Burke and Jeremy Toljan.

Eleven players in total (so far) and nine of them were first team players. That will be a huge void for Neil Lennon to try and fill in this transfer window. I, like a lot of fans, was fairly optimistic that Filip Benkovic would make a return for another season loan.

While today’s statement doesn’t mean that move can still not happen it has dampened my optimism. Benkovic was a fan favourite and he looked like he loved every single minute of been part of Celtic’s Treble Treble winning campaign. Because of injury Neil Lennon probably didn’t see the best of Filip but surely John Kennedy would be banging the Benkovic drum?
