Colby Donovan has opened up on his rise at Celtic and made clear what playing Champions League football means to him.
Donovan has gone from playing for Celtic B to starting Champions League qualifiers, and the right-back admitted it has been a massive change.
He said: (Celtic FC YouTube), “My journey’s been incredible so far, it’s only started, I’m still a young boy, but from being where I am now to what I was in the B team two or three years ago, it’s a big change.
“You’re playing in the Champions League, the best tournament in football, so for me to play in the Youth League and then take the big step up and play in the Champions League, it’s class, I’m loving it.”
Donovan is a lifelong Celtic supporter, which makes his journey into the first team even more special to watch.
He added: “To be a fan and to play for a club you’ve always supported, it’s a dream, but when you go out there you know you’re doing it for them, and yourself as well, but you’re mainly doing it for them.”
The teenager has been given his chance following Alistair Johnston’s injury and has taken it in style, with a brilliant performance against LASK in last Wednesday’s 3-0 first-leg win.
Donovan stressed the importance of the second leg in Linz and what it means to the Hoops.
He said: “For us to come over here and get another result, that’s what you want to play in.
“Celtic’s a Champions League club, so for us we need to come over here, we know what the job is, and we’ll be focussing on that come tomorrow night.”
The Hoops have a strong 3-0 lead, but LASK have been clear pre-match that they believe they can still win the tie, comments the Celtic squad and backroom team will be well aware of.
Tonight will be one of Donovan’s biggest games yet in a Celtic shirt, and it is brilliant to see a Celtic academy graduate performing so well in recent weeks.
