It looks like there will be a quiet and premature end to Timo Weah’s short Celtic career with the player almost certain to be called up to the USA squad for the under-20 World Cup which kicks off in Poland in May.

We reported earlier this month the player would be set for a club vs country row should Celtic make the final of the Scottish Cup and that’s exactly what they achieved on Sunday.

The American, who already has eight full international caps for the USA international team will be asked to help the under-20 sides in their World Cup quest and with the first USA game kicking off on May 24th there’s little chance Weah will be available for the Bhoys.

The frustrating thing about the whole situation is Weah has the potential to be a big player for Celtic but the managerial upheaval put an end to any rhythm he was getting into. A bright start to his Celtic career was made before Rodgers departed and Neil Lennon came in and wanted to go with players he knew better.

Weah has started once under Neil Lennon and came on as a second-half sub against Aberdeen on Sunday. However, it would be selfish of Celtic to keep the PSG loanee at the club and miss out on the World Cup to sit on the bench for the Bhoys on the day against Hearts.

Speaking about the issue, Timo was very diplomatic.

“I guess the club has to discuss it with the national team.” He told SunSport.

“I’d love to play in the Cup Final, but it’s a World Cup as well. So it’s up to the club and the national team to discuss on which one is better.

“It’s going to be my first Scottish Cup Final, so it would be good to be a part of that.

“It’s always good as a youth winning cups with the first team and being a part of something

“The most important thing is the team, and I’m going to be here for them.

“Well, hopefully, I’ll be here because I have the World Cup coming up and we have to discuss that with the clubs and the national team.”

“Hopefully, whatever happens, the guys will go into that game and pull off the win.”

Weah could miss trophy day against Hearts on the final day of the season if the USA camp wants their squad assembled before the end of the season.

With nobody at the club hinting at an extended loan deal for the player, it looks as if he’ll head back to PSG after the World Cup.
