Ange Postecoglou got his opportunity at Celtic because Eddie Howe decided he couldn’t take the Celtic job without his coaching staff. Celtic fans are delighted Eddie decided not to take the job in the end paving the way for Ange and everything else that’s come since.

It was the saga of the summer, Eddie was lined up for the job. Dermot Desmond and the Englishman had gone as far as talking about potential targets when he was confirmed as Celtic boss but at the eleventh hour it all fell to pieces.

Ange was on Celtic’s radar and was immediately installed as the favourite to take over from Neil Lennon.

There was a learning curve from Celtic fans. The majority of supporters didn’t know much about the Australian but were soon impressed by his credentials.

Ange has won the League cup and has gone about rebuilding the whole Celtic side. A side that now sits top of the SPFL table with six games to go.

Eddie finally made the jump back into management with Newcastle after a Saudi takeover. Asked about the Celtic manager recently, Eddie was full of praise :

As quoted by Newcastle World, Howe said: “I think he’s done an incredible job.

“I did actually watch the Old Firm game on Sunday. It was a very interesting game, the atmosphere is always electric and are very interesting games to watch from a coach’s point of view.

“Full credit to him, his staff and players for what he’s done this season because it was a team in slight transition and I think he’s been excellent in recruitment.”

A sliding doors moment at Celtic for sure. But there’s not a Celtic fan out there who would have Eddie over Ange now.
