Former Celtic defender Emilio Izaguirre has confirmed that he is involved in talks to create a partnership between the Hoops and his current club in Honduras.

The 36-year-old recently hung up his boots but remained firmly in the game as he was appointed as sporting director at Montagua.

During his time in Glasgow, he had a very successful two spells at the club as he won seven league titles, three Scottish Cups and two League Cups and is fondly remembered by the Celtic support.

He will be hoping to draw on lessons which he learned at Parkhead to take him into his new role as a sporting director and wants Montagua to be able to form a partnership with the Scottish champions.

“I have already spoken with Celtic’s representatives with the aim of establishing a strategic alliance with both clubs,” said Emilio Izaguirre as quoted by the Daily Record.

“Our president visits the UK a lot and will go to Glasgow soon to confirm it. I want to use Celtic’s technical coaches, their training complex and establish an agreement that would hugely improve this club which is what we want.

“I was passionate about learning and I also remember that at Celtic they gave me three boys to train like me and eat what I ate. It was then I realised coaching wasn’t for me and I wanted to do something bigger.

“In two years, I worked closely with and prepared Kieran Tierney and he was eventually sold to Arsenal for £25 million. That’s how my desire to prepare footballers and their structure for their careers grew.”

A partnership like this could also benefit Celtic, as the Sydney Super Cup showed how important it is for the club to grow its brand.

There is a total wealth of potential out there for the Hoops having only recently returned to the Japanese market.

Celtic recruited Argentinian fullback Alexandro Bernabei in the summer, and many would like to see the club do much more business in South America and possibly Central America  and a partnership like this would only serve to enhance the bond further.
