Former Celtic defender Gary Caldwell has been announced as the manager of Exeter City [BBC Sport].

His most recent job was assisting his old Hoops teammate Shaun Maloney at Hibernian before the pair were sacked after only four months in the job.

The former Scotland international has previous experience of being in the managerial hot seat as he has held roles at Wigan Athletic, Chesterfield and Partick Thistle.

Exeter currently find themselves 8th in League One and the main objective for Caldwell will be to try and lead the club to the riches of the Championship which he has previously done during his time at Wigan.

The club appear to be in a pretty good place with Caldwell signing a long term deal with the club. In his previous roles, he has tended to only last the one season meaning that it’s important Exeter put faith in him.

Earlier this month, Matt Taylor who led the club to League One last season left for Rotherham United.

The 40-year old had a successful four years playing under Gordon Strachan at Celtic as he formed a strong partnership with fellow Scotland international, Stephen McManus.

He won two league titles, one Scottish Cup and one League Cup. Caldwell brings a lot of experience to the job and will be hoping to succeed.
