Today it was reported that former Neil Lennon signing and Barca beating bhoy Adam Matthews is to be released from his Sunderland contract. Jack Ross is now looking to build on his squad after the bitter disappointment of missing out on promotion after looking very likely to go up.

Playoff pain means the Black Cats have it all to do again next season and Adam Matthews is not in those plans because of the wages he is on according to SunSport who quotes Sunderland’s chief executive.

Matthews, 27, will now look for another club this summer and it just so happens Celtic are desperate for a player in his position.

Matthews had a great career at Celtic before moving down south – 150 appearances scoring five goals with 22 assists to his name. Also part of the team who famously beat Barcelona during the club’s 125th anniversary celebrations.

It was four years ago when he left and fans may forget how young Adam was when he was first at Celtic. Even my first reaction to the news he was free was ‘he must be getting on a bit’. The player is entering the prime years of his career, he would be a free agent and knows the club very well. Basically, he is a right back equivalent of Neil Lennon after the Irishman’s appointment.

A player who might not capture the imagination of many fans but if you were told there was a free agent in England who is 27-years-old, has played at Champions league level and knows the club, many would be screaming for that player to be signed.

The notion if you re-sign someone you’re going backwards is sometimes the case but not always. This would make a lot of sense!
