CHARLIE NICHOLAS can’t be accused of having too many rational thoughts. If you have watched him on Sky Sports, you will know that reality and Nicholas aren’t the best of pals.

So he was true to form with a column he wrote for the Star this week which lets us know his thoughts on Celtic’s January transfer window.

Instead of urging Celtic to look far and wide for young undiscovered talent – trying to bring in a new Virgil van Dijk, Wanyama etc. The former Celtic man wants to see the club pay record-breaking amounts of money to land Christian Benteke or Jermain Defoe from the English Premier League.

Don’t get me wrong, two players who were very good on their day and Benteke would be an excellent signing for Celtic but in what reality is that happening? Celtic have a stringent wage structure at the club and have shown they will not break it for a fly by night signing.

Nicholas Wrote: “I’d look at Liverpool’s Divock Origi. He has quality as he showed recently in the Champions League clash with Napoli. The Belgian isn’t getting a regular game so why not go and ask the question?

“Brendan could try to get Jermain Defoe in from Bournemouth or Christian Benteke from Crystal Palace.

“He has been poor at Palace but he would score goals for fun up here. If Celtic are serious about retaining the title then they need proven players to hit the ground running.”

Just like Charlie is on another planet, Celtic are in a completely different market when it comes to signings.

Jermain Defo wouldn’t even be considered value for money if we managed to bring him in to fit into the top end of our wage structure – the guy is 36!
