During the summer there was a lot of speculation around young Scottish left-back Aaron Hickey who made the move from Hearts to Serie A side Bologna.

Before making the move to Italy though, several reports suggested that many clubs were interested in making a move for the 18-year old including some of the biggest in the world such as Bayern Munich. At one stage, there were even suggestions that Hickey was close to making a move and a deal was agreed to join Scottish Champions, Celtic.

This was confirmed by the youngster himself in an interview, writing off that there was interest from English giants Manchester City but the interest for Glasgow was certainly true, as reported by Glasgow Live.

“Bayern are a great club, but Bologna is ‘massive’, they are of a high level, I’m sure I have chosen a big club.

“The thing that most convinced me when I came here to visit some time ago, is the family atmosphere I felt immediately. I immediately felt a good feeling. Did Manchester City also look for me? I would say no. Celtic? Yes.”

In the end, as we know, Hickey made the move to Bologna which may have left Neil Lennon and those at Celtic a little disappointed but at the same time the club didn’t fully lose out.

Hickey was once a product of the Celtic academy before moving to Hearts. When he did make that move, the Celtic board smartly included a 30% sell-on fee in his contract so the club still made some money from the move.

It would definitely be interesting to see what would have happened had the youngster signed in the summer. He seems to be progressing well and Italy and fair play to him for taking the big jump by going to a foreign country at his age.
