It’s only right when a club signs a new player that they talk him up to their support, even massage the truth a little and over sell your new investment.

We see it all the time, even Celtic dabble.

However, Porto have gone from massaging the truth over Saidy Janko’s Celtic career to full blown ‘did he, aye?’.

A lot of people were taking aback last week when Saidy signed for FC Porto just a year after Celtic sold him to St Etienne for a nominal fee.

The player has made great strides since then and has earned the move to Portugal but the club website claims he helped win two League titles and Scottish Cup are very wide of the mark.

Here is an extract from the profile Porto wrote about his time at the club.

‘Later signing for Celtic, in 2015, helping win two championships and one Scottish Cup. Saidy Janko played in the UEFA Champions League and in the Europa League for the Scottish club.’

  • Janko played only 11 SPFL games for Celtic during his time in Glasgow, only 5 of them being starts.
  • He never played for Celtic in the Scottish Cup.
  • The 22-year-old played in 5 Champions League qualifiers for Celtic – starting 4 of those game.
  • His grand total of Europa League time for Celtic came to 7 minutes.

So they’re technically correct about European comments but helping the club to any of their trophies is a bit of a reach.

Janko has signed a four-year deal with Porto and is excited to get going, speaking to the club website he said:

“I’m blessed, as this is a great opportunity for me and I’m happy to be here. FC Porto is a great club, I’m honoured to be here and to wear this blue and white jersey is a dream come true”,

Fingers crossed he can contribute more to his new side.
