BRENDAN RODGERS has stated his squad is ‘too big’ to have a proper competitive good spirited atmosphere, and it must be addressed in January.

There is so much talent either deemed surplus to requirements or just not good enough by the Celtic manager which means players are training with the squad on a daily basis that will be unhappy.

For some, it’s easy to see their Parkhead fate, for others they might need to be pushed out the door.

Scott Allan is undoubtedly for the chop in January after failing to secure a move away in the summer. There were rumours of a Hibs loan deal that didn’t materialise – the midfielder is free to talk to clubs in January about a free transfer and Celtic might just let him go early if he signs elsewhere.

Marvin Compper is another one that has to go, BUT that’s not a given. The rumours of his high wage mean the defender will happily sit on his deal until someone offers him the equivalent or his deal runs out. While Rodgers would like the German to go, it’s not an open and shut case. Marvin is contracted to the summer of 2020 – someone needs their a*** kicked for that deal.

Cristian Gamboa is another man who is entering the latter stages of his Parkhead deal and no matter how much he comes in and ‘does a job’ Brendan Rodgers is not entertaining the Costa Rican right back. He strikes us as a guy that wants to be playing football and will be desperate for a move to get back to first-team action.

Jonny Hayes has come in and hasn’t had the game time but when he has played here, and there it’s not been anything to write home about. The Irishman once came in to replace Patrick Roberts (Sort of) after a severe injury he has become an afterthought and would benefit from a move away.

It will be a big month for Eboue Kouassi. He might be heading for the Parkhead exit, but perhaps just a temporary one would do for now. The 20-year-old was brought in to provide competition for Scott Brown but is yet to make any real breakthrough. He has time on his side and would benefit from going out to get real game time – a move to Kilmarnock much like Ajer could be the best sort of move for the defensive midfielder.

When Rodgers bemoans his massive squad, notice four out of the five players mentioned are Brendan Rodgers signings or at least under the umbrella of signing for the club under the Irishman’s watch.

The Celtic manager is correct that the squad is too big, but it’s a problem of his and his recruitment teams making.

  1. That last paragraph is spot on. As well as getting rid of surplus players , we need to have a long hard look at our scouting and recruitment policy. Maybe some of those who work in that area need cleared out as well.

  2. We need a top scout for finding gems but i still think that the manager should also go and take a look at any new player the scouting master thinks is a good fit for us the manager should have last say on all new players, in the team right now we could move out up to eight players and bring in three seasoned pros to beef up the team when the going gets harder,i would say lets bring it on clear out and bring in three new faces…
