He only spent a short time at Celtic and fell away towards the end of his loan deal but there was a time when many Celtic fans were clamouring for the club to sign Oliver Burke on a full time deal.
The attacker came in all guns blazing and did help spark a lethargic Celtic into life with his pace early on. When Neil Lennon came in and decided there was better options available the player suffered and never really got going again.
He returned to West Brom in the summer and was loaned out to Alaves in Spain’s La Liga.
As he the player looks to the future, he admits he will more than likely have to move on from West Brom next summer to get first team football on a permanent basis. WBA paid over £13m (TransferMarkt) for the attacker from Leipzig and have very little return for their investment.
“I’m happy with where I am now and getting the game time. It’s such a great league as well, so I’m very happy.” Burke told BBC.
“It’s going very well, I’m really enjoying it.
“I wouldn’t say it’s far different from leagues in other countries I’ve played in. I think maybe some tactical things, and the language barrier, but I feel like I’m learning a lot and they’ve made me very welcome.
“I’ve been there [West Brom] so long, but then I’ve not actually played many games for them, so you almost feel like you are not part of that team because I’ve been to other clubs and been on loan.
“I just have to focus on this loan I’m on now and take it all in and hopefully good things come from me going on loan now and getting game time. Hopefully it puts me in the shop window.
“I’d love to be a club and be the first name on the team-sheet every week, but I think it will come in time. I’m still at a good age and I’m just doing everything I can to learn the game.”
There’s talent with Burke for sure, the lad’s pace means he can be a dangerous proposition but it’s his close control that suffers and his coolness in front of goal.
If he can improve and develop, Oli could yet be a star and fulfil his early promise.
