John Harston has criticised the club for its handling of the Kristoffer Ajer situation as he prepares to depart this summer.

The Norwegian defender has just one year left on his contract this summer, so the Hoops will likely be forced into selling him for a lesser fee than they would have hoped.

Speaking on Go Radio, Hartson has hit out how the whole situation has been handled by the club, which is likely to force their hand in selling the defender.

“I’ve heard somebody say the other week that he’s been wanting to leave in terms of he’s had a sniff of a few clubs, his agent would’ve been getting on to him. It’d be a big shame.

“It’s Celtic’s own wrongdoing. Because how come they’ve let his contract run down to a year? If the boy just blatantly refuses to sign a new deal, there’s not an awful lot you can do.”

In an ideal situation, if Ajer weren’t to remain at the club, as one of our key assets, we would be able to sell him for a higher price.

However, because we have allowed ourselves to get into a situation where Ajer can discuss leaving on a free in January, you would think it is almost certain his time in Scotland is up.

Fingers crossed, we can hold up for a decent enough fee for the 22-year old, but at this stage, if reports are to be believed, it doesn’t look like we will.
