Sky Sports pundit, Davie Provan has hit out at Scottish First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon for her criticism towards Celtic and their trip to Dubai during the week.
Writing in his weekly column for Sun Sport, Provan claimed that Sturgeon had selective memory, having been critical of the Hoops for some pictures coming out of the UAE. However, she completely forgets to have any mention of Scotland’s celebrations which broke the rules after the qualification for the Euros.
“If this pandemic teaches us anything it’s that our politicians don’t give a toss about football unless there’s a headline in it.
“Nippy Nicola couldn’t get on Celtic’s case quickly enough over the Dubai trip.
“Of pictures showing players having a beer in the Emirate, Sturgeon said it “raised a question whether all the rules on what elite players have to do within their bubbles around social distancing are being complied with”.
“Fine, but on the night she photobombed Scotland’s celebrations in Serbia there wasn’t a critical word uttered over bevvied players getting too close in that drunken conga line.
“Selective amnesia?”
He continued by saying, “You can argue the toss over Celtic’s trip to the desert.
“For me, they missed the chance to play two of their games in hand before Rangers play in Aberdeen.
“But spare me the idea Lennon’s players put the planet in mortal danger.
“The entire party would have provided proof of a negative test on arrival in Dubai and you can bet they were tested before they got back.
“When it comes to caning footballers, politicians are due a day off.”
When it comes to the trip to Dubai, I was one of those who didn’t agree with it happening. During a pandemic and even more so with the form the side have been on, they didn’t deserve a trip to Dubai.
However, Provan has a point. When it comes to the Scottish Premiership and Celtic, Nicola Sturgeon was very quick to point the finger at Celtic over this trip after a few pictures were released.
This leads to her asking for questions to come from the SFA but it was completely shut down by them after it was revealed the government had signed off on this.
In Scotland’s case, everyone loved those videos of the players celebrating but she can’t have it both ways.
If you are criticising one, then you have to do so with the other because at the end of the day both are tweaking the rules in some sort of way.
