We don’t think Davie Provan and Peter Lawwell have each other on their Christmas card lists given the number of times we’ve seen Provan have a go at the CEO over the years.

On Sunday, his SunSport column kept it quick and clean but he made sure to put in a dig at the Celtic head honcho while talking about Gers title chances.

The Sky Sports co-commentator described Lawwell as ‘true to form’ when he mentioned Celtic had signed nobody during the January window who could immediately improve Neil Lennon’s side.

“With Jermain Defoe out, nobody seriously thinks Florian Kamberi will fire Gers to the title. Either way, Gerrard must curse the winter break.

“It torpedoed their title hopes last year and leaves them needing snookers again this time.

“It’s not as if Celtic used the transfer window to blow Rangers out the water.

“True to form, Peter Lawwell didn’t sign one player who could go straight into Lennon’s team and improve it.”

Many Celtic fans felt deflated on deadline day, hoping there would be some experience coming into the club after signing Patryk Kilmala and Imaila Soro – both 21 and developing rather than the finished article. However, it didn’t materialise with Celtic hunting everywhere for a winger in the dying hours of the window.

Provan also used his column to call Leigh Griffiths out on a stamp he was never carded or cited for a week on. Make of that what you will.
