Liam Morrison left Celtic for Bayern Munich a few seasons ago.

The defender was offered the opportunity to train in a world class system, with world class coaches.

When Liam was at Celtic, there was no clear route to to the first team and he’d have watched many players ahead of him failing to make an impact because of the limitations Celtic worked under.

Until this seasons introduction to the lower league we had the very poor reserve league for our youngsters and a first team setup that looked scared to bring in youth players.

When you look at Liam’s choice, yes, it was sore to see him leave for another club, but the defender did the best thing for his career.

On Tuesday night, the former Celtic academy star made the squad for Bayer II, the German club’s second string.

The team played it out to a 1-1 draw in a top of the table clash against Bayreuth. Although Liam didn’t get on, it’s signifies another big step in his career and that the coaches have faith in how he’s developing.

Even with the Lowland league setup, Celtic still don’t have the right infrastructure and plans in place for talented youngsters. It seems a bit like pot luck at the moment.

We need to invest heavily in what we do at youth level.
