Former Celtic defender Gary Caldwell has been appointed the new interim boss for English Premier League side Newcastle United’s under-23s side.

Before his time at Celtic, Caldwell spent some of his days as a youth player in the Newcastle youth system between 1997-2004, then making the move to Hibs before playing for the Hoops.

During his time at Celtic, he created a partnership with Stephen McManus under Gordon Strachan, as the duo helped Celtic to two league titles, a Scottish Cup and a League cup during his four-year stay.

Since the end of his playing days with Wigan Athletic, Caldwell’s coaching career so far has been very up and down.

In his first role with Wigan, he helped steer the side a quick return to the English Championship after their relegation to League One. However, he was sacked from that role not long after returning to the second tier in England.

Some fans may remember Caldwell as a coach best for his time at Partick Thistle, though. He saved the Jags from relegation but was again sacked in the following campaign as they sat near the bottom of the division.

His methods as a coach seemed a bit questionable, to say the least, and after his dismissal from Partick, he claimed that he believed he was good enough to be Scotland National Team manager.

Now, this move seems like a good opportunity for the former Celtic defender to reset his coaching career and get back to better days.
